2006 Basketry Workshops

Learn to weave baskets this spring! I have three different weekend workshops (10am-6pm) scheduled for March and May. Classes are taught at the Tryon Life Community Farm in SW Portland (except wicker class). Fees are $30 per basket (free for Lewis and Clark students), and include all materials. You will need to bring your own scissors and a knife.

You will learn how to gather and prepare materials, and weave while working with your basket to create form and even designs.

Pre-registration is required so we can prepare materials. Contact us.

Coiled Basket Workshop, March 18-19. Make a small coiled basket. Coiling is intricate, and is often seen in aboriginal baskets. Location: Tryon Life Community Farm/tryonfarm.org

Willow Wicker Basket Workshop, March 11. Lewis and Clark Students Only. Make a small wicker basket out of local willows.Wicker is a great basketry style for beginners. Wicker baskets are large, durable, and quick to weave. Location: Tamarack, Lewis and Clark University.

Bark Basket Workshop, May 6-7. Make a small twined cedar basket (not shown) or a medium-sized folded bark basket (cedar or maple bark). Twined bark baskets are beautiful, and cedar bark is a local aboriginal material. Folded bark baskets only take a half day, but are beautiful and great for berry-picking or flowers.
