2006 Walk of the Mindful Forager
Those who spend a great deal of time living in nature develop certain ways of understanding the world. These patterns allow us to understand the native way of seeing. We will hike up the Oregon Coast and learn to forage for wild edible plants, seafoods, and more. We will also learn about natural ecosystems, their creatures, and create an awareness of the highly inter-connected environment around us.
Activities will be diverse, including mussel gathering, plant sketching, moving meditation and traditional-style Raven storytelling. While a structured environment will exist, each group will be mentored along the way, and the group will be directed by what each person wishes to learn and explore.
These hikes are somewhat physically intensive. Though we will not cover many miles each day, many of the hikes ascend several hundred feet. We will be sleeping outside in the forest or near the beach each night, and will primarily rely on food we pack in. We will, however, have opportunities to take it easy in Cannon Beach and other places along the way.
To make it a lighter hike, we will only be taking light hiking gear. This means we will be sharing tents and/or tarps, perhaps foregoing sleeping pads. The possibility of rain on the coast is always present, so we will also need raingear.
You can see photos of the June trip to the coast, hiking and foraging, here. It is beautiful and uplifting to walk in the sand, to have nothing to do but take in the sounds and smells of the wide world!
With these new classes I'm starting a new (but long-in-the-works) tiered-tuition system.
For these hikes the cost is $100.
However, the following scholarships might apply to you:
Minorities: -$25
Women: -$25
Students: -$25
Indigenous or Native: -$50
In addition, I will reduce the tuition for people who are coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds (parents or yourself), or any other situation which you can relate to me that shows you are on the wrong end of a system of advantage (i.e. racism). You should write me a short explanation through email.
The purpose of this tiered-tuition system is not to offend anyone. It is in place to help those who have historically been mistreated; I believe strongly that history's legacy still affects us today.
The purpose of tuition in general is to cover costs and to compensate group leaders fairly for their time, and that's it!
Pre-registration is required due to transportation and equipment sharing. Contact
us. Please let us know if you have a vehicle, tent, and sleeping bag(s).
