Classes & Workshops

Dancing Hawk offers short workshops, ranging from a few hours to several days long. We can come to your site to give demonstrations or talks. For longer craft workshops we bring people up to our camp to teach particular skills, such as bowmaking or basketweaving. Demonstrations, talks and personal instruction can usually be arranged anytime, please call us at 541-806-0898 to ask.
Rates for group demos, lectures and individual instruction are $100/day.

Wild Edibles Workshop
Want to supplement your diet with foods that we have eaten for hundreds of thousands of years? Unlike other wild edibles courses, we concentrate on the gathering of mast crops, or wild foods that can be harvested in sufficient quantity and are delicious enough to be a significant part of your diet. This includes acorns, cattails, salmon, mussels, and more. This workshop can span from a few hours to a week.

Firemaking Workshop
The ability to make fire is one of the defining characteristics of humans. Watch and learn how to start fires using only local natural materials. Your eyes will widen the first time you blow a smoking ember into flame. Firemaking only takes a few hours.

Bowmaking Workshop
With the overflow of computer-designed, space-age compound bows, there has been a return to the more soulful traditional wooden bow for hunting and recreation. In the 1930's, Gilman Keasey was able to put 9 out of 9 arrows into a plate-sized circle from 90 yards. Very few archers even armed with compound bows would be capable of such a feat today. Learn to make your own bow from the starting point of a tree you choose, with nothing but a few hand tools. It takes about three days of work, but you will leave with a beautiful shooting bow that you will be glad to pass to the next generation.

Brain Tanning Workshop
Few people realize how many resources go into a single piece of fabric, and understand that the clothes they wear are not something to be taken for granted. Learn to tan deer hides with all natural methods and materials instead, and wear sustainable buckskin clothing. Buckskin is the most incredible material for making clothing, bags, and anything else. Hide tanning takes at least four days, and you must let us know a few days in advance so we can soak the hides. If you're ambitious, you can tan a few more hides in the same time.

Cedar Bark Basket Workshop
Bark baskets are the native solution to bags and containers for the Northwest Coast. They are beautiful, and take very little time to make. This workshop takes only a few hours, though you must call ahead so we can soak the bark.

There are many more workshops we can teach, please ask us about anything you might be interested in.
